You have a power supply to the air compressor. For the typical DIY type home or small workshop air compressor, that power supply is a plug on a wire that connects to a wall socket. The pressure switch will be closed passing electricity if the tank air pressure is below the pressure switch low pressure set point. If the air pressure in the compressor tank is higher than the pressure switch low pressure set point, the pressure switch will be open not passing electricity and the power stops there.
In the photo above you see two views of the same pressure switch. The image on the right has the cover on, and on the left, the cover off. Note that there are two wire-ways under the floor of the pressure switch. One of these is to bring the power cord from the wall plug through the wire-way and up to the terminals on the pressure switch, and the other is to allow the wires from the switch back out of the switch and up to the motor circuit.

If you bring power directly to the motor or if you wire to the pressure switch incorrectly most commonly done by doubling up on the motor contacts instead of using the line contacts the compressor will run continuously.

Water pressure switches in well systems control the amount of water pumped to the system's storage tank.
As the tank is filled, the water pressure increases within it. When the tank reaches its peak pressure, typically at 60 pounds per square inch, the switch cuts the electrical power to the water pump. As water is used, the pressure in the tank decreases.
When the pressure falls to 40 psi, the switch energizes the pump circuit and the cycle repeats itself. With basic electrical knowledge you can wire a pressure switch with a few tools and materials. Turn off electrical power to the well circuit at the main panel. Tag or otherwise mark the circuit breaker to indicate power is to remain off until you restore it. Remove the cover retaining nut from the top of the pressure switch with the combination pliers.
Lift the cover straight up from the switch and set aside. Loosen all the screws on the pressure switch terminal bus using a screwdriver. Turn the screws in a counterclockwise direction, however, do not remove the screws from the bus. The bus terminals are marked T1, T2, L1 and L2. Install a cable clamp into each of the two holes provided for them on the pressure switch. Tighten the clamp nut with combination pliers.

Insert the wires from the main panel into the cable clamp on the side nearest the L1 terminal connection. The wires from the pump are inserted into the clamp on the other side. Pull the wiring through the cable clamps up to the sheathing. Tighten the clamps snugly making sure the clamp pressure is on the sheathing and not on the individual wires. Connect the black wire from the well pump to the T1 terminal on the pressure switch bus. Tighten the terminal screw with a screwdriver turning in a clockwise direction.
Connect the white wire from the well pump to the T2 terminal on the pressure switch bus. Tighten the terminal screw. Connect the black wire from the main electrical panel to the terminal marked L1. Connect the white wire from the main electrical panel to the terminal marked L2. Connect bare copper ground wire from the main panel and the ground from the pump to the green grounding post located on the base of the pressure switch.

Step 3.Wiring diagrams and descriptions of the various circuits seem to be a rare thing for Ford manuals - out of the 4 or 5 manuals I own for this era Ford vehicles, only one - the Comet and Falcon Shop Manual - has some decent wiring diagrams and descriptions, and even they have some odd head-scratching errors on them. I scanned them in at a pretty large size to preserve as much detail as possible and then scaled them down to half-size from there to make the "small" versions.
Some details may be easier to make out on the large versions, so I've posted them in case they are needed. Also, I've grouped them by what they related to - in the actual manual these are interleaved together in various ways - so yes, the page numbers are out of order. If you want them in order, either buy your own manual or print these out and sort them by page number. Based on those diagrams, some stuff I downloaded off the 'net, plus some other wiring diagrams I have from other manuals, and the actual harness I removed from the Ranchero, I was able to put together a reasonably complete color wiring diagram for the truck. It is focused on a single page full color diagram for all of the wiring in the truck that attempts to show wiring in some rough idea of how they route in the actual vehicle, plus which connectors and wires go where. If I decided to do any changes, this is a great baseline for what should have originally been in the vehicle, and I can use it as a starting point for any updates.
As long as I make an updated copy of the diagram with any changes I make, I'll have a complete wiring diagram for the truck for later reference.
That will make solving any problems later on much easier, plus if I ever gasp! Unfortunately, no one reproduces the Comet harnesses, and although they are slightly better as a base to start with, it's hard to find good harnesses.
